Rigging Bench Ideas
Hi all,
I'm setting up a new location, and will need a new workbench. I've got a long stretch for measuring/cutting, but will need a utility bench along a shorter wall. The space is 26' long, and has at one end the most perfect anchor point a rigger could ask for: it's a 4'x2'x3' stone block with 1/2" threaded studs at the top! I intend for that to be the left end of the bench, and am planning on building a 20' work surface at a height that'll be comfortable for standing while working. What I'm looking for from you fine folks is ideas for what you'd incorporate into this space, or maybe you could describe your actual/dream workbench. Only thing set in stone is it's location, height and that there will be a winch mounted about 6' from the anchor block for setting splices. Any and all ideas appreciated! Thanks Kristian |
You might be able to find an old tavern shuffleboard, They are about 21' long and 2' wide, at least 3" thick maple. I found one for $40.00 at tavern game dealer. Not usable for Shuffleboard because of cracks or? but a great workbench with a plank on the far side if needed for width.

my ideal rigging bench is 85' long, as thats the longest stays we work with on the boats that can get up the chesapeake bay, generally.
build the bench top at the height of the top edge of your hip bone. i find 2' depth of bench is great cause you can rip plywood in half and build the bench double think 3/4" ply with staggered joints. run a router down the surface and glue a tape measure in the top, then coat with poly.... I have built them of 2by12's and been quite happy as well. depends on the space, and use. then you must consider what you will be building on this bench - ours is for making rigging - as we do not 'glue up' wooden spars so have no need of that kinda bench. our masts stay on horses opposite the bench. that leaves you to have swage machine location to consider, and this is very important to efficiency. also, where will your cable be stored. |
