Weep hole in boom
 

I took apart a boom yesterday that tends to collect water. Each end is closed by an aluminum plug/cap. Stainless steel machine screws pass through the wall of the boom into threaded holes in the plugs. The outhaul has an opening in the top of the boom, so rainwater flows in through the opening. I'm considering drilling a weep hole at each end, say 1/8" diameter, in the bottom of the boom near but not into the plug. A hole at each end seems necessary because the boom might slant down forward or aft. Is this a good idea?

Also when I reassembled the boom I put Lanocote on the plugs and Tefgel in the threaded holes and on the screws. Good idea? I cleaned the slight amount of corrosion off the plugs. They were a loose slip fit into the boom.
