whipping...I hate it!
I recently spliced up a halyard for my 35' masthead boat. Complete with stripped cover. It's made from Endura braid, so it has a wicked strong amsteel core.
but the crossover, I need to whip. and I hate whipping. cuts into my fingers, it's always uneven and ends up with the line sorta bent up like a banana. so...what tips do people have to make it not so frustrating? I have #4 twine. is that the right stuff? the halyard is 3/8" diameter. -m |
i wouldn't bother. better to just 'secret sew' the cover and core at the crossover. nothing to catch/come unraveled....:)

Yup
Whipping has its place, but it is not at the crossover of a stripped halyard. All you're trying to do is to keep the buried cover tail from falling out, so why put a bulky, rope-bending assembly there?
On the other hand, a whipping should not be a painful experience; perhaps you might practice it a bit, so you'll be ready for a painless experience, the next time you need to prevent a rope end from raveling. Fair leads, Brion Toss |
So....don't whip and instead stitch only?
That's all? -M |
