Mast question

Hi

I am curious about a mast I saw recently and wonder if it is suitable for a sailing boat. The section is made up of 4 pieces running longitudinally, riveted every 4" the length of the mast. It is also sleeved, a ± 14" sleeve, in the middle of its 55' length. How will it cope with bending is my concern, but there may well be other issues. Any input much appreciated. Thanks.

I am no mast expert but as an engineer I would think it would depend on the spacing of the rivets so you might want to add that to your post. Personally I would not trust it, but don't listen to me, I sail with a wood mast.

Hi,
Haven't seen this before, but it could certainly work. Of course the mast must be much heavier than a comparably stiff one-piece extrustion. Very labor-intensive to build, too. But I give it points for cleverness.
Fair leads,

Thank you for the input. Yes it is a heavy section Photo of splice for your interest.
