POSH II pre stretched three strand spun polyester
Anyone familiar with pre stretched POSH II three strand spun polyester line (Langman ropes) for use as halyards on traditional boats? I am told that it has less stretch than sta-set (in similar diameters) with good performance characteristics. Any suggestions for non color coded lines (seems harder to find these days) without the cost of dynema for use as halyards? It seems VPC would be a nice choice if it there was a plain white or buff colored option. Alas, it seems colors are in and vanilla is out.

Elasticity
Hi John,
I can't find data on elasticity for this rope, but I don't see how it could be remotely as inelastic as Sta-Set; the 3-strand construction tends to be inherently more elastic, is definitely weaker per diameter, and the "spun" fibers are much more elastic than the filament fibers of Sta-Set. Posh is pretty good rope, but I would need some convincing on this one. Fair leads, Brion |
Line Options
Thanks Brion. I talked to the folks at R&W Rope. I got the impression that because it was heat treated and pre stretched it was similar or better than Sta-Set. But after investigating more it seemed that it is similar or better when compared to overall breaking strength. And, the POSH II is a much lower breaking strength due to the shore fibers. It does seem like very nice line though.
I found a double braid also made by langman called Poseidon that comes in white and natural and is supposed to be for halyards (prestretched etc). But breaking strength for 10mm was about 5000lbs. In the end, I decided to go with Marlow pre-stretched Doublebraid. They are trying to get back into the US market. They claim their 10mm has a breaking strength of 8000lbs and the stretch is about the same or less than sta-set X (5000lbs) due to its overall much greater strength. It comes in white and natural. It's about the same price as Sta-Set (about a dollar a foot for 10mm) so its fits the parameters I am looking for. They sent me a very impressive XL spreadsheet of their prestretched doublebraid compared to a bunch of similar lines made by the other manufactures. Pretty impressive if it's accurate. I am always skeptical of statistics and graphs produced by someone trying to sell something. But, I'll know soon enough. Anyway, I'd be happy to send that data to you if you are interested. |
Data
Hi,
Yes, do send that data. The people at Marlow tend to be good at technical assessment. Fair leads, Brion Toss |
Emailed Data Sheet
Hi Brion. I emailed the data sheets to you as requested.

Nice
Hi,
Much stronger than the competition in all but 1/2" diameter. Heavier, though... I'm going to see if I can get my favorite Marlow rep to weigh in here on the differences. Meanwhile, I can say that they are a strong contender for Most Improved Rope Company. Fair leads, Brion Toss |
Ps
Elasticity numbers don't seem to result in a corresponding reduction in stretch. We'll see.
