Rigging adapter
Each of the chainplates on my vessel has a single 3/8" eye 1/8" thick, and my current turnbuckles use 1/4" clevis pins.
I have seen many rigging toggles that would work (1/4" clevis - 1/4" eye) but the pin on the chainplate would be 1/4" and I have learned that would load the pin and the chainplate improperly. Do you know of a source for 3/8" eye to 1/4" clevis rigging toggles? Or is there a better way to do this? I also have the option of using turnbuckles with 1/2" clevis pins, but that would still be the same situation (3/8" eye to 1/2" clevis), not to mention the increased unneeded weight. The minimum breaking load on the system is about 1900lbs. Thanks in advance, Matthew Wallace |

Hello,
Ideally, all of the components will be compatible. Trouble is, there are lots of incompatible options, and it sounds like someone has chosen several of them. First, what size is your rigging? What construction? Is it correct for this boat? How do you know? If you know what the load is, and therefore what size the wire is, you will automatically be steered to the right pin size. So for instance if you need 3/16" 1x19, you'll need a 3/8" clevis pin. If you need a smaller pin, bushing is an option, as is reaming the hole (though the latter can only be done if you leave enough meat after the hole is reamed). Fair leads, Brion Toss |
