forestay/furler issue
 

I had a new forestay/furler installed. It is too loosely tensioned for my taste. The problem is the installation includes a solid, stainless bar from the bottom of the furler to the anchor point on deck. Therefore I cannot tension the forestay.

Suggestions?

What brand of furler did you have installed?

do you have a masthead or fractional rig? on a masthead rig tightening the backstay will tighten the headstay and less so with a fractional rig.

I hope that you mean the roller furler has a solid stainless flat bar attached to a double jaw toggle, then to the deck fitting for a bottom termination ...

What kind of furler, boat, and rig ?

You need to determine weather the forestay is loose, or the backstay. As the backstay was probably released to install the furler, either one could be out of adjustment.

Try telling whoever installed it for you , they should be able to help as well...

The furler's a furlex. The rig is fractional. The boat's a Hunter 35. The bar's attached to the base of the furler. Since my original post I determined that at least some furlex furlers can be adjusted for tension. I've tensioned the backstay (split), but that doesn't help.

i have a 1988 hunter 35. in order to tension the forestay the upper shrouds have to be quite tight. when the backstay is tensioned it bends the mast more then it tensions the forestay. i have a backstay adjuster as well. i have found that with the uppers and lowers tight along with adjusting the backstay i can control headstay tension.

Hi,
You can probably retrofit the optional turnbuckle from Furlex to your furler. But I'd only do that if you really needed to play with rake and bend, as opposed to tension. Is this the same rig you asked about in another question, regarding tuning?
