Ti vs bronze?

What advantages does Ti have over bronze for most chainplate applications?

It is lighter of course, but for 99.9% of boats the difference can't be significant down low.

It is shiny and stays that...

Why not?

C954 Bronze has similar numbers to stainless:

Tensile 85,000
Yield 32,000

It's cheaper than Ti, (3/8" x 2" x 26" flat for $56);

Lasts indefinitely in the marine environment (even...

More info...

The Vizzion that failed was 3/8", which compares reasonably well with the 9mm Spectra that is the boat designers spec. So I don't think it is a simple undersize issue.

I find it hard NOT to blame...

Halyard Failure

Looking for thoughts on preventative maintenance for high tech halyards.

A bit of background. The boat is a J-105 in day charter service on San Francisco Bay. Used a lot (4+ days per week) and...

Old hulls getting "brittle" doesn't make a lot of sense. If you have ever seen cured raw,
unre-enforced polyester or epoxy resin it is VERY brittle right from the get-go. It is only the glass...

Brian,

Certainly Lynx is just an example of a type. The America of America's Cup fame would be another classic example.

All of those are answers we discussed, but none of them were found to be...

Extreme mast rake in old schooner designs...

At the sailing school I teach at a group of instructors were discussing traditional boats when this particular old American schooner design came up: http://www.privateerlynx.org/

There were many...

Dan,

I can't answer your questions, but maybe you can answer one of mine...

Years ago I tried to find out WHY my ketch had an insulator in the triatic stay. I got all kinds of crazy answers,...

As a sailor, not a rigger, I can't comment on your first two questions, but I do feel qualified to comment on the reefing system.

My comment: Like Brian Said.

At work I sail a number of boats...

I'm not somebody who is often going to argue with Ian, he knows a lot more than I... but in this case before I agreed with him I would want to know if he has data supporting his skepticism about...

I gather this is required by some of the racing rules, but under what conditions would it be a benefit?

Seems to me if the mast was far enough out of column to jump out of the step, you would have...

Another option for clean lines...

Some of the chainplates on my boat are mounted with what are essentailly flat head machine screws in a countersink. What makes them unusual is that the head has an undercut on the taper, making for...

Asymetrical Spinnaker running rigging

Bob,

Actually the spools are appealing. The "hard parts" are very lightweight and are pretty well covered in soft rope when in use! I was more trying to justify not embracing the "typical"...

Asymetrical Spinnaker running rigging

Thanks Bob,

I know under most conditions people don't think of the metal snap shackles being as nasty on a spinnaker as they are on a flapping jib, but I know that as I pull the sock down to douse...

Asymetrical Spinnaker running rigging

I thought I had found the perfect solution in the rigging of my spinnaker, and in fact it is easy to rig and works well.

What I do: The clew of the spinnaker has a short line spliced it it, and...

Michel,

A "tapered" mast is smaller in diameter at the top then at the bottom. Reducing weight to the top of the mast can help with performence a great deal.

Typically this is done by taking a...

2 holes and a hook

Thanks Brion.

That 2 holes and a hook approach is exactly the one that I had intended on using. In fact on the mizzen mast I'll be using the same holes that the cable clamps for the external...
