Default Spruce Masts vs. Aluminum

Okay.....I don't want to start a pitter-patter debate here.....just looking for some informed FACTUAL objective input. I'm intersted in buying a Formosa 51 which has spruce masts in very good condition. She has been owned by the same lad for 25 years and he maintained them (varnish) and literally never sailed her; she is a Southern Cal boat. Mainly I'm wondering what the life cycle of the glue is. The spruce weight vs. aluminum? The sticks are around 63' or so (I don't really know). I've read boxed spruce is really not that much heavier than aluminum on a mast of that height. Basically, I'm operating on the "If it ain't broke don't fix it." mantra. Note: I'm going to sail the boat to Hawaii and South Pacific. After of course, I have Brion re-rig her with new rigging; epoxy seal and Awl Grip the masts. Any Takers? Thanks in Advance, Scot
