Whipping has its place, but it is not at the crossover of a stripped halyard. All you're trying to do is to keep the buried cover tail from falling out, so why put a bulky, rope-bending assembly there?
On the other hand, a whipping should not be a painful experience; perhaps you might practice it a bit, so you'll be ready for a painless experience, the next time you need to prevent a rope end from raveling.
