I read the specifications from NE Rope and Samson as about the same weight per 100 ft. I think you are looking at Tenex-TEC. What I am looking at is straight 12 strand Tenex, which is lighter.
I have tried Regatta braid and found that it snags too easily for my taste. I returned it after doing everything NE Rope suggested to make it work and completely eliminating all sharp edges anywhere close. Million dollar tape on everything and spectra braid (courtisy of NE Rope tech support) over the lifelines. Still pulled a 2 inch snag next time out.
My main concern is friction on the winch. I have 3 ft samples of the 7/16 and 1/2 and have tried to measure the grip on the winch. It seems about the same but as you have pointed out, "about the same" is not a scientific term. I don't know how to quantify the grip with such a small sample. Perhaps I can figure something out or perhaps you have a method you can share.
