People are still working out ways to use HM lines for a lot of applications. For boom lashings, what we've mostly seen are multiple turns of webbing, heavily stitched, or multiple turns of rope, either stitched or knotted. When the lattermost, the idea is to have sufficient turns that not much load comes on the knots, which would otherwise drastically weaken things.
You'll also find multi-turns in Yales "Loupes" (sp?), and these are seeing a lot of use in the field. In our shope, we usually prefer to make a locking grommet (see Working Rope, book 5), as it can be done without a sewing machine or other machinery, and achieves most impressive strength. Plus it looks tidy, with or without a cover.
