Mast splicing using a composite sleeve
Recently I had my mast broken just below the spreader base and just above the lower shroud tangs.
The boat is a Jeanneau RUSH 30 footer with one spreader and one set of aft lower shrouds with a deck stepped aluminum mast of 3mm extrusion (15cm x 11cm) with total length of 11.5 m .
I had to carefully cut down the damaged ends thus producing a loss of appx.28 cm of mast height.
I want to rejoin the two pieces making a composite splice of glass-kevlar-carbon section of sufficient structure which will be produced from a female mould copied exactly from a "healthy" mast section.
My intention is to restore the mast's height by building the "missing section" together with the internal insets on it's end in one piece.
The spreader base and the lower shroud tangs will be located on this section at their original positions.
The finished part will be painted in aluminum like color for UV protection and will be inserted with thickened epoxy.
What I want to know is if anyone has attempted mast splicing this way and what opinions one might have on the matter.
Offcourse there are many more details involved but I think that they can be sorted out one by one in case I will start the remedy this way.
