Will the backstay no longer be dynamic? Just a fixed wire with a turnbuckle? No this shouldn't pose any problem though obviously you will need a larger diameter wire than the rod was for the same strength which means more weight and windage though not much. Perhaps you could go with dyform which is nearly as stout as rod but can be handled like wire (swage or even mechanical fittings).
