![]() I am replacing some old running rigging on my Cal 34. I sailing the Puget Sound and head offshore only rarely. I thought I wanted to replace the halyards with Sta-set X. I have been strongly advised by my trusted rigger that is going aloft for me to use some Sampson XLS yacht braid which appears to be 2x the cost. Any comments on what I gain in service/performance besides a larger bill?

![]() Hi,
XLS is stretchier than X, at least at low-to-medium loads where you'll typically be sailing, which is why I'd prefer to use X. It is possible that your trusty rigger is talking about XLS Extra, which has a Spectra core. This stretches a lot less, and it might be worth using on your boat. New England's VPC is another possibility. Benefits of less stretch, aside from performance, include less frequent reefing, and the halyard helps preserve sail shape in higher windspeeds. ![]() After one season I am not happy with the Stay Set X I used to replace my jib halyard (furling). The standing end has become very stuff and unworkable.
Just a data point... I've had recommendations to use XLS Extra for halyards instead of Stay Set X. -p |
