![]() I plan to put a gaff-headed rig on the Cape George 31' cutter I'm finishing, and am weighing the pros and cons of galvanized halyards. If I use galvanized for the forestay and jibstay, should I serve them for their entire length? Will the sail hanks chafe the service off in no time? If unserved (or is it unserviced?) will the bronze hanks chafe the galvanization off?
Before anyone suggests a roller furler, I must add that that is NOT an option--I hate furlers. Thanks, Ben Zartman |

![]() Sorry, when I said halyards I meant shrouds. Maybe my question will make sene now...

![]() Served shrouds are great, but I've only seen served headstays used with wooden hanks, and even then, the service was well-tarred to the point of being smooth and shiny. Bronze hanks will eat through service. Quality bare galvi wire, a little oiled, will wear eventually, but not badly; at the price it's no stress to replace it before the damage gets worrying, and even at that you ought to get several seasons.
The obvious compromize is served galvi shrouds and stainless headstays... |
