Default Splcing Question: Tucking cover tail into splice

Hello all,

I'm trying to splice 1/2" Samson Ultra Tech, using a core to core eyesplice, and Im running into trouble finishing the splice off. I want to tuck the cover tail into the splice, but can't seem to get it all the way home if I do. I've tried tucking the tapered cover back into the core, and then burying both, and I've tried tucking the cover straight into itself at the throat of the splice, both with no (good) result. Any ideas? Im trying to give this splice the appearance of a standard dbl braid splice, so I dont want to leave the cover tail outside the splice.

Thank you

Default Tough job, at the least

Hello,
It used to be possible to tuck a bit of the cover inside with Samson as well as Yale, but my recent experience is that, as a result of toughening up the covers for abrasion resistance and stopper performance, the covers are now too tight to allow anything but a properly-tapered core. But you might try the splice by the method of taking the core out on the end side of the line, tucking the cover stub in at the appropriate place, and then pulling a bight of core out at the far side of the eye, to tuck into. I believe the Yale site will have the instructions. But if you want a pretty splice, I'd recommend serving over the taped-down stub.
Fair leads,

Default Got it

Finally ran the splice home, it was a ton of work. I ended up tucking the cover into the core just before it went into the throat of the splice. It ended up looking like the crossover on a standard double braid splice. I ran a few stitches through the crossover to hold it in place, will this affect the strength of the rope?
Thanks for the fast reply by the way, what a great resource this is.
Cheers

Default Strength

Hello,
Oh sure, now you ask if the rope strength will be affected. And the answer is, probably yes, a bit; braided rope is weakened by having extra material stuffed into it. This can be offset by the extra mass that you get, but there are limits. That's one reason that tapers are so important, especially in HM ropes.
Fair leads,
