What about 12 strand single barid jib sheets?

I am thinking of using some 1/2 inch 12 strand single braid polyester line for some jib sheets. The line is called Tenex and it is about 40% stronger than StaSet and has about 40% more stretch at 10% of strength so I figure the stretch under a given load should be the same. I desire the no kink quality of 12 strand as this is a problem with our double braid jib sheets and our turning block. This line is not expensive, another plus.

It has a snag and abrasion resistance coating so it has more of the finish of new double braid, nothing like Regatta Barid. In other words, it is a bit slick, at least when new, like StaSet is.

Is there anything about using line on a winch or for a jib sheet application that would make line like this a bad choice? The line will be spliced and connected to the jib clew with a soft shackle so no bowline. The intended application is for a 155 racing jib on a classic wood boat.

I always think it good to ask when thinking about doing something different than the standard "safe" way. On the other hand, if we don't try new things, life gets dull.

I haven't used Tenex in this application, but it might work well. It is certainly tough stuff -- arborists use it, and use it hard. That coating might cause it to slip on the winch. Or stick when surging, for that matter. These could be safety issues.
Oh, and Tenex is a lot heavier than the alternatives: 2.2lbs/100 ft. more than Sta-Set; and 3 more than Regatta Braid. That's enough to make a difference in sail shape in light airs.This is all speculation on my part, so if you go ahead and try it, please get back to us on the results. Some reason Regatta Braid isn't in the running?

I read the specifications from NE Rope and Samson as about the same weight per 100 ft. I think you are looking at Tenex-TEC. What I am looking at is straight 12 strand Tenex, which is lighter.

I have tried Regatta braid and found that it snags too easily for my taste. I returned it after doing everything NE Rope suggested to make it work and completely eliminating all sharp edges anywhere close. Million dollar tape on everything and spectra braid (courtisy of NE Rope tech support) over the lifelines. Still pulled a 2 inch snag next time out.

My main concern is friction on the winch. I have 3 ft samples of the 7/16 and 1/2 and have tried to measure the grip on the winch. It seems about the same but as you have pointed out, "about the same" is not a scientific term. I don't know how to quantify the grip with such a small sample. Perhaps I can figure something out or perhaps you have a method you can share.
