![]() I've been reading the riggers apprentice, in the versions Loft procedure chapter for table 5, it talks about using galvanized turnbuckles. The price difference between galvanized turnbuckles, stainless or bronze seems to be kind of way off. Galvanized seems to be on the order of 1/10th the price for the same size bronze or stainless version.
So my question is, am I missing something or is there a huge quality control issue with the 1/10th priced galvanized turnbuckles, as the WLL seems to be almost the same between the different types. Thanks. |

![]() Hello,
First, quality varies dramatically. Your best bet in the U.S. are the ones made by Crosby. In Europe, check out Toplicht's. Next, pin sizes, and thus fit to chainplates aren't always compatible. Be sure that pins as well as strength are taken into account. And last, they will rust, and probably sooner than later. There are ways to slow this down, but the best methods add time and cost, narrowing the difference to steel/bronze. Having said all that, galvanized turnbuckles can be a wonderful bargain. But take all of the above into account. Fair leads, Brion Toss |

![]() Thanks for the reply and the information.
What seems like an easy choice, seems to morph into a rabbit hole of information on one thing or the other and just seems to go deeper and deeper. |
