or the 'dingy knot'

I dont know where it is from, but we tie an '8' knot in the end of the line, stick a bight of the line through the cringle in the head of the sail, then the '8' through the bight, sinch up and hoist. This does impart some twist on the masthead, but gives the ability to put the middle of the cringle at the top of the sheave in mast.

that said, if you had 1/8" wire, why not change the halyard for 5/32" spectra, whose splice will fit fine, and just have a 5/16" tail spliced on for hoisting. Then you will be strong and fit.
