Default Metalmast Reefaway in mast furling systems

I have a 1983 Bristol 41.1 with a Metalmast installed with a Reefaway/stream stay in-mast furling system. I have only owned the boat for one season and have found this system unsatisfactory. It is difficult to operate, cannot be reefed, and the furling rod hangs out the back of the mast extrusion when under sail. I am considering my options for changing this system. One thought is to close up the back of the spar and install a Strong Track and the other option of course is to put a completely new rig in the boat which I may not have a big enough budget for. Does anyone have another idea or recommendation?
