Default Unlikely

Hi there,
And first, I commend you on your spirit of inquisitiveness. This is how we progress. I don't exactly follow your idea, but as far as I understand it, it seems unlikely that the splice would work, if only because of bury length. I could well be wrong, but the only way to tell would be to break several samples, and record the results. Similar splices have been tried, including in our shop, with some success. Please follow through on this; even failures can provide valuable data. Or, as the old saying goes, "Good judgement is based on experience, which is based on bad judgement."
Fair leads,
Brion Toss

Thanks for the reply,

1 foot is 64 diameters of the HM. That is almost 72 diameters :-) Perhaps I should be thinking of 2 ft so that I have that many diameters of the dual braid. Is that what you are thinking?

Just a point of clarification, I have two buries of this length in mind, one for the core and one for the cover and they run head to tail so to speak. So, that would be a total of 2 or 4 feet of the HM that had some of the dual braid inside depending on which diameter I use as the base.

By the way, speaking of testing, I did some testing on some soft shackles made from 1/8" amsteel and tied them together with 3/8 dual braid. I put a straight section of 1/8 in the center with eye splices to serve as a calibration strength. I pulled on them between two cars and unfortunately it broke the 3/8 dual braid and not the 1/8 HM. Search YouTube for "testing soft shackle" Look for the white Sable wagon. It is 18 seconds. Broke right at the bowline. I intend to repeat the test with stronger line tying things together. If I can get one of these halyard splices made, I will test that too.
