Default Leisure Furl luff tape chaff

I have a 2000 Moody 42 with an older Leisure Furl boom furling system. It has recently chewed up our luff tape. An investigation revealed some loose and/or missing rivets along the luff track, possibly contibuting to the chafe due to track rotation between track sections. The system also has a broken halyard sheave track on top which must be either repaired or replaced, unrelated to the tearing luff tape.

A local rigger suggests a complete change out to the newer Leisure Furl track instead of simply repairing our existing system, not surprisingly at more than twice the cost. I am not convinced that the newer Leisure Furl system is any easier on luff tapes than the old one - it seems to be an inherent issue with all Leisure Furl systems.

Does anyone have experience with the older and newer Leisure Furl track systems who can recommend the appropriate fix - repair versus replace? In speaking directly with my Leisure Furl system rep, he told me at the recent Oakland boat show that the tracks made no difference with regard to luff tape chafe, but in support of our local rigger he said the exact opposite. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
