![]() Evolution of the Sparcraft debacle... I've located a mast that is a full length section, but shorter than my original stick... Plan is to lop off the stemhead and splice a length of my original busted stick on top...
So it changes splice locations from the original... Moving it from just above the lower spreader to just below the top (third) spreader... It seems to me that the loading is much lower with the new proposed splice location, and this new splice location will work just fine... Any thoughts anybody??? (diagram attached) Thanks for looking everybody! HS ![]() |

![]() Obviously I meant lop off the masthead box, and splice on the top section from my old mast... I was a little rushed and foggy from meds...
So I guess I let the cat out of the bag a little early, as I do have future plans to change the stem... ![]() ![]() |

![]() Hi again,
And first, glad to hear that you found a section. The good news is that the place you plan on is out of any unsupported length (as was the old location), and that there is less compressive force near the top. The only bad news I can think of is that the weight of the splice piece will be much higher, so I'd recommend looking for other means to reduce weight aloft, to compensate. Splices are ordinarily located where yours was to keep the weight down, and to allow for further shaving via a tapered top. Fair leads, Brion Toss |

Thanks so much for your opinion... The factory internal splice extrusion I have is 64", and weighs about 20 lb, so it definitely isn't insignificant at that height. I have a little leeway with the splice location. I could make it a few feet lower, but not higher... As seen now, the internal section could overlap the top spreader bar location by say 6 inches with the splice 28-30" below the spreader... I'm thinking that moving it closer to the center of the unsupported span is a better move... So now that you see a basic rig diagram, if I get you the RM data, what's a ballpark cost to have you guys run the rig calcs to be sure all is well??? Thanks again for everything! HS |
