short splice in HM

I need to make a couple of short straps in 3/8 HM line with an eye and thimble in each end 14" and 16". Is this possible? Even with a drastic taper it seems that is not much bury.

Make a loop with the ends to each other and then sieze near each thimble's throat. If you've sized the line for the capacity you need, you can now go a bit smaller if you like.

I'll just add that you can work a locked Brummel into the loop, as seen in my Book 5.

Actually after talking to my friend the 3/8 line he had was left over from his winch and way oversized. the line would be seeing static loads of maybe 200# and shock loads 3 times that. I went for the brummel with a short bury, it is also a non mission critical piece so even if it breaks no big deal. Thanks for the addvice.

In post #3 you suggest making a locked brummel in the loop. I don't think this is topologically possible if the loop is completed first. If you work with the un-looped line, obviously you can make your brummel eye in each end, and the bitter ends could be end-for-end spliced, but I can't see being able to make the end-for-end of exactly the right length (same as the standing part), so the load would all end up on whichever was the shorter section.

I like the idea of just making a loop, then forming the eyes and stitching the throats. This could be done with some tension from eye to eye, to assure equal lengths to each leg.

You are right, it is topologically impossible to get a locked Brummel for a closed loop. So... I cheat. If you have a copy of Book 5, the method is in there. If you don't, and don't want to buy one, I'll email a picture of the page.

Perhaps, like all modern problems, we have a failure to communicate. I am well aware of the Book 5 "cheater" locked Brummel in the loop, where one end is unraveled and re-braided around the standing part.* I assume this is how the loop would be made.
In the post in question I had envisioned a loop, made with a locked brummel, with locked brummel eyes in opposite ends. The only way I could see to do that was to make the two eyes in the line (unlooped), then join the bitter ends to make the loop. The problem, as I see it, would be to make that last "cheater" splice such that the tension in the spliced and un-spliced sections would be equal- very hard to do IMHO.
Going back to Almanor's op, I wonder is a simple loop would not do the job for him? Does he really need eyes in each end? If he really needs eyes in each end, how about making the thing out of 5/8" spectra webbing and sewing the eyes? Depending on the load and application, this might be a very simple solution. We really need to know his strength requirements and more about the application to craft an optimal rigging solution.
