Default Long Spline in Wire Rope

I am trying to perfect my long splices in 7 x 19 wire rope. Everything goes great until I start to tuck the 12 strands. Sometimes they bury OK, but sometimes the "buried" strand wants lays in between two of the outer strands, forming a seventh outer strand. Brian's book references the grommet for these steps, but that section talks about removing the heart strand as you bury a strand, and I do not think the heart strand is removed here (the heart strands butt together where the two ropes join). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
