Default Turnbuckle Initial Setting

I'm replacing the shrouds and stays on a 30 foot sloop.
When measuring out the new rigging, how far into the turnbuckles should the studs be threaded to set the length of the cable before cutting?

Thus far I've not gone wrong with both studs fully threaded but not sticking visibly into the barrel.

Hello,
Most shrouds will have enough constructional elongation that you can follow Ian's practice, and end up with cotterable studs, and no chance of two-blocking things while tuning. But, with an unreasonable amount of effort, you can calculate fairly precisely how much each wire will stretch for tuning, deduct that much, and end up with all turnbuckles at about half extenstion. That's how I try to do it. Sometimes I get close.
Fair leads,
Brion Toss
