Default Tightening Hi-MOD compression fittings

The manufacturer (Hayn) has told me:
"The Hi-MOD fitting should be “hand tightened” fully and then proceed to apply a 1/2" rotation with a wrench for the appropriate fit. It is possible to gall the threads if over tightened."
So how do I know if my hand tightening is enough before adding the extra 1/2" rotation?
And is that really 1/2"? one half inch? Where is that measured? Or is it 1/2 rotation?
