Good story. Like the one about how you can tell black bear poo from grizzly poo. Black bear poo has berries, seeds and the fur of small animals. Grizzly has all that and small hiker’s bells, and smells like bear spray. I don’t claim to be a grizzled Alaskan, but I have spent quite a bit of time in bear country. I’ve smelled them and seen a few running the other way. I tend to think people’s concerns about bears in the woods are over blown. I’m reminded of a story from Robert Marshall’s book Alaska Wilderness. Quoting Ernie Johnson, whom Marshall esteemed as the finest outdoorsman he ever met, “There’s no question a bear will sometimes attack a man, just like there are occasional crazy humans that will do the same thing, but it happens so rarely it isn’t worth thinking about. I’ve traveled around Alaska as much as most men and I’ve never yet seen a bear that did anything except run away from me.”
